Learning Analytics

What Is Learning Data?

Learning data is any data that is created or collected during the running of a class. This includes:

  • student assessment submissions
  • grades and feedback
  • discussion posts
  • responses to in-course surveys
  • logs of student activity in learning tools

A Data Access Request (DAR) is required for any access to data for purposes other than Teaching and Quality Assurance related to one’s own course or teaching practice, including use for a UBC Administrative Function, UBC Project, or UBC Initiative.

Instructor Use of Learning Data

Instructors can use and access their own learning data for reflection on their own teaching practice, or for enhancement of the pedagogy of their courses.

Learning data includes high-risk student data and student intellectual property. These data must not be submitted to any AI tool or application that has not been assessed through a UBC Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA).

For help accessing your learning data, or determining allowable tools for use in analysis, email us at lt.hub@ubc.ca.

Research Use of Learning Data

Instructors who intend to use their learning data for research must first obtain conditional approval of this use through the Behavioural Ethics Review Board (BREB), and then submit a Data Access Request.

Requesting Additional Data

Instructors who wish to access data beyond their own courses, including data from Workday or data from a course belonging to another instructor, must submit a Data Access Request.
